Editors’ Selection In ‘Trustees of Nature’ Oliver Lowenstein looks at the National Trust’s move beyond heritage conservation to embrace environmental concerns. Jules Pretty contrasts the reality of industrial farming with pastoral notions of agriculture in ‘Land and Livelihoods’.
Muhammad Yunus, and the Grameen Bank which he founded, were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2006.The Grameen Bank was established as an alternative to traditional banking, providing credit and loans to the poor without the need for collateral, thereby eliminating exploitation by money lenders. Instead, the bank’s financial resources are made available to clients on the basis of mutual trust, participation and accountability. The microfinance scheme has created opportunities for self-employment for people in rural Bangladesh, allowing them to invest for the future.
