A security guard stands amongst plastic bags left by pilgrims at a temple in Chongqing Municipality, China. The Chinese government has announced a nationwide ban on stores distributing free ultra-thin plastic bags from 1st June 2008. The new rule says that all retailers have to clearly indicate the price of their plastic bags and charge customers. Chinese people use up to 3 billion plastic bags a day and their disposal is causing severe pollution problems in the country. (See also page 37, ‘Guerrilla Bagging!’)
