ROCK SOUND RANDOMNESS
CHRIS GLITHERO (THE ZICO CHAIN)
Paper or plastic? “Paper.”
Why? “I haven’t got a clue.”
Winter or Summer Olympics? “Winter, because it all looks easy, you can do it when you’re dead. I’m very fond of sliding.”
HOT SHOTS
SABATTA Hard, funky, and utterly compelling, Londoners Sabatta have already made a not inconsiderable mark on the capital’s live scene. Now they’re ready to spread the word. Think Red Hot Chili Peppers and Living Colour, with hints of Nirvana, Hendrix and Megadeth, and you’d be close. The band’s debut album ‘Princess Raw’ has already got people talking. So get on the case fast – before the rest of humanity starts raving about ‘em. www.myspace.com/sabatta
If you were to attempt to break a world record, what would it be and why? “Penis stretching, I’m good at that.”
Have you ever stolen anything? “Never.”
Ever cut your own hair “Yes.”
If you could battle any villain or monster, who would it be and why? “George Bush because he’s a cock.”
What do you think of cyclists who don’t follow any motor vehicle law, yet continue to ride on the road? “I think it’s fuckin’ cool: they don’t pollute, they don’t give a fuck, let them drive where they want.”
If beggars can’t be choosers, don’t they make the choice to beg? “No, no, that’s made for them I reckon.”
Should Pig Latin be an internationally recognised language? “I guess it should.”
Why? “I don’t know, it would be more fun than not.”
If you were a university professor, what would you teach? “Philosophy, because it’s interesting.”
Where are you right now? “I’m in Bristol, man. I’m in a skate park watching all these kids just near the Carling Academy. There are all these little skaters around; it’s cool man, it’s a nice vibe around here.”
If you could memorialise any historical figure, real or imagined, with a gigantic statue, who would it be and where would you put it? “Sophia Loren and I’d put her in my bedroom (laughs).”
Do you have anything you’re secretly ashamed of? “Some of the stuff that’s on my iPod is pretty tragic.”
Like what? “I’m not telling you.”
Not even a clue? “I don’t know, some of it’s cheesy, put it that way. It makes me jog faster.”

TO HELL AND BACK Ash to make a devilish return
Northern Irish rockers Ash have revealed that their fifth full-length album ‘Twilight Of The Innocents’ will be released on July 02 through Infectious / WEA, with the single ‘Polaris’ hitting the shelves two weeks earlier (June 18). Speaking to Rock Sound, frontman Tim Wheeler explained that the band’s new material and their decision to return to the original three-piece line-up earned them much praise on their recent comeback tour of British universities. “The feedback was great – no disrespect to her, but no one even seemed to notice that Charlotte (Hatherley, former guitarist) wasn’t there anymore,” he said. “Plus, the reaction to the new stuff was overwhelmingly positive, especially to the title track
which we were calling ‘In Hell’ previously.” Wheeler also went on to explain the significance of the album’s title, which was gradually revealed via an extended game of hangman held on their Myspace page. Said the vocalist: “We recorded a lot of the album at night so there’s a nocturnal vibe on it anyway, but also I thought it was a good way to represent the end of our innocence as a band.” Ash are set to play at a number of summer events this year including the Isle Of Wight Festival and a headline slot on the Radio 1 stage at the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds festivals. The band are also playing a four-date July residency at London’s Koko. www.ash-official.com
QUIET RIOT! Paramore complete fan-tastic album
Tennessee pop-rockers Paramore are gearing up to unleash their second album on June 11 – and despite it being called ‘Riot’, vocalist Hayley Williams has confirmed they’ve not gone all grindcore on us. “People are probably going to get the wrong idea, but people will get the wrong idea about us anyway, so we thought we might as well call it what we want,” the flame-haired femme told Rock Sound. “So many people associate the word ‘Riot’ with violence and pure chaos, but actually its figurative meaning is ‘an unbridled outburst of uncontrollable emotion’ – that’s why we picked it.” Guitarist Hunter Lamb left Paramore two weeks before they hit the studio to record ‘Riot’, but the line-up was temporarily bolstered by some lucky competition winners during the sessions. After
holding an online competition on You Tube asking fans to submit covers of Paramore songs, one lass called Mary and a number of runners up were picked to sing backing vocals on the song ‘Born For This’. “It was awesome,” a hyped-up Hayley said. “We had a barbecue, just hanging out – it was just like being with friends, it was great.” While the singer admitted that the band might need an auxiliary guitarist for touring purposes, she confirmed they will officially remain a fourpiece for the time being. Paramore are set to play the second stage at this year’s Download and will play a UK mini-tour in late May; see gig guide for dates. www.paramore.net
