Fiona Gibson has proved a popular choice of columnist since she started with us last October. Her page triggers more correspondence than any other. In this month’s column she talks about an episode when she was without a cooker and it reminded me of our kitchen extension saga, which took months and left us cooker-less throughout.

It’s amazing how quickly ready-made meals, which seemed like a treat at first, became boring. However my worst memory was having to wash up in the bath. Of course it was all worth it and I relish rustling up ‘proper’ food on my new range cooker. I wonder if Fiona’s account on page 31 will remind you of any kitchen nightmares of your own? Do let me know. Although women make up the bulk of our readers, we have a small, loyal male readership, so this issue we’ve tailored some features especially for them. Look out for the health feature on page 39 and the travel piece on page 203. If you’re male and you enjoy them, do tell us and we’ll try to include more in future issues.

This month

I want… … the new Classic recipe collection book by Sainsbury’s, £5. From the best roast potatoes to perfect bangers and mash, it makes a great (and cheap!) gift, too.

I love… … the Hotel du Vin chain and I’m delighted that a couple of Bistro du Vins have now opened, with great

French cuisine (hotelduvin.com).

I’ve got to have… … Dragonfly Rooibos Earl Grey tea bags near to hand. Recommended to me by nutritionist Amelia Freer, they’ve helped me cut my caffeine intake (dragonfly-teas.com).
