Everybody loves Alstroemeria as they give copious exotic looking blossoms from June to November that last for up to 14 days in a vase! These varieties have been specially selected as they are difficult to find and if you do manage to find then they are often quite expensive. Great for cutting and happy in borders and containers. Dead head by pulling the flower’s stems gently from the bottom of the plant, the resulting ‘wound’ then initiates new flowers. Prefers well drained soil in a partly shaded sheltered site. Height and spread 60-90cm (24- 36”).

W lc m t Can you believe it’s going to be 2012? It seems like only yesterday that we were gearing up for the new millennium, as we organised huge parties and worried whether our computers would keep working when the clocks struck midnight. Twelve years on, the world has continued to change apace, with all kinds of innovations and revolutions grabbing the headlines, but thankfully the best things in life have stayed the same. Whatever happens in the world, friendship and family are as important as ever, and sharing good times and stories is still a lovely way to bring people together.

change apace, with all kinds of innovations and revolutions grabbing the headlines, but

This month we’re treated to some more wonderful memories, including stories of sledging in snow and sliding on ice – I remember the one wintery week I actually rushed to school each day, not to get to class but to take my turn sliding across the icy playground before the bell rang! Whatever this winter brings, memories of snow-ball fights, sledging and building snowmen always bring a smile to my face. For me, the abiding memory of snowy days is the eerie silence that comes with snowfall, broken only by the sound of people laughing and having a good time. So here’s to another fun-filled and safe winter, and if you’re already thinking of holidays for the coming year, don’t miss our fantastic competition to win an £850 break for four, on page 46. Why not have a go and enter? You never know, it could be the perfect, winning start to the new year!
