W lc m t With so many wonderful memories flooding in to the Scottish Memories office each month, I often use this space to thank readers and to share a few recollections of my own. But when it comes to fashion – the subject of two features in this issue – there are far too many cringeworthy moments to recall, since I repeatedly tried, and failed, to dress to impress. These days I’m much happier in a comfy cardigan and some (whisper it) old slippers than struggling to get into tight-fitting jeans!

I guess we’ve all had some wardrobe malfunctions (that’s the modern term, I’m told) in the past, but at least changing fashions help to define particular eras and bring back evocative memories. Just take a look at some classic TV shows (see page 18) or flick through your old family photo albums and you’ll be able to chart the ever-changing trends in clothes and hairstyles, as showcased by uncles, aunts and grandparents. The reassuring thing is, future generations will do exactly the same thing in years to come!

I’m sure the fashion features in this issue will send many readers on a walk down memory lane – just don’t trip up on your flares as you go! – and we have plenty of other fascinating articles on offer, from real ale enthusiasts to Egyptian secrets, plus the chance to claim a free Weir’s Way DVD, starring the late Tom Weir (see page 37), a man who often sported a woolly hat while out exploring – a piece of practical headwear that will surely never go out of fashion!
