W lc m t Technology is everywhere these days, whether it’s mobile phones, ipods, computers or sat nav, the younger generation seem to be glued to these gadgets and gizmos for most of their waking hours.

It’s not all bad, of course, and it’s fair to say that there has been a revolution in communication thanks to the internet – the web is a wonderful tool for bringing people together – but this sense of progress is nothing new.

Take the Victorian era for example. This was a fascinating period in our modern history, when innovation and industry thrived. Just look at the wonderful images in our special feature on page 10, such as the incredible shots of the construction of the Forth Bridge, and you can begin to appreciate our ancestors’ achievements.

Of course, one of the greatest inventions, which began to be widely used during Victoria’s reign, is the camera, which enabled these historic moments to be captured on film. Could any of the subjects in this pictorial feature have imagined that we would be looking at their photograph more than 100 years later?

Speaking of photography, I’m sure you will enjoy the beautiful pictures of Ayrshire in this month’s destination guide on page 27, which provides all the information you need for a day out or holiday in the area. We’ve even included a map for a picturesque drive, so you can leave your sat nav at home!
