W lc m t The incredible memories of those Scots involved in war (see our feature on page 10), conjure up a whole range of emotions. There’s the pride of knowing that so many brave souls lived through such difficult times, and then there’s the astonishment, that such horrific conflicts ever took place.

The curators of the new museum, which recalls so many of these evocative memories, also have their attention focused on the present. It’s sometimes easy to forget that while we sit in the comfort of our homes, thousands of brave men and women are fighting for their country in places such as Afghanistan, and of course, Scots are and have been involved in many other conflicts over the years.

We all know how vital it is to remember what happened in wartime, and to remind future generations of the sacrifices made. It is this thought that makes reading and publishing readers’ memories of these times for Scottish Memories so satisfying. This month, we also feature the reflections of the late Tom Weir, who as a young man escaped to the great Scottish outdoors he so loved the day before he became a soldier. His poignant words captured the situation perfectly: ‘I wondered if I would ever see the place again and deplored the folly of war when the world is such a beautiful place.’
