WINNERS AND CHANCES TO ENTER Competitions

Thank you to everyone who entered this year’s illustration and writing competitions. As usual we had some wonderful entries. In the end we felt Holly Scholfield’s beautifully textured woodcut was a worthy victor; see more of her work on pg 73 where she illustrates this issue’s Fabric Swatch: Candlewick.

Illustrate your point... For this year’s competition we would like you to choose an unusual fabric we have yet to feature and illustrate it. The winning entry will be published as a full page image so should be in a square format with a 4mm bleed and a clear space on which up to 250 words of text can be placed. Please don’t send your original illustrations. Entries must be scanned and files no larger than 2mb emailed to competitions@selvedge.org with the subject line ‘Illustrate your point’ and your name. Shortlisted entries may be required to submit original artwork. Closing date 31 May 2012. Winners will be announced in the September issue and published during 2012.

Word Perfect... If you prefer to express yourself in words why not enter our writing competition? This year we would like entrants to write a ‘Fabric swatch’ see pg 73. Choose a fabric and encapsulate its particular qualities and history in 300 words. Please check that your subject has not previously been featured as a ‘Fabric swatch’. Articles must be submitted as unformatted word documents in an email with the subject line ‘Word perfect’ and your name to competitions@selvedge.org. Closing date as above.

There’s lots to celebrate in 2012! Selvedge is determined to look on the bright side this year and wants your help. We would like to invite you to create a silk scarf to commemorate an event occurring in 2012. The Olympics and The Diamond Jubilee spring to mind but you may know of other occasions or local events to celebrate.

Scarves have been used to mark historic moments for decades. In fact they offer an unexpected record of life in the 20th century, see issue 41. Those produced for events such as VE Day, the London Olympics of 1948, the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, as well as the Festival of Britain, should provide plenty of inspiration but remember, we are looking for an original design in your signature style.

Entries will be displayed at this year’s Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace and we’re hoping to represent the work of as many readers as possible. And as a special thank you we would like to invite everyone who enters to a private Selvedge reception where you can meet the Selvedge team and our competition judges, details to be announced. To enter please produce a printed or painted silk scarf, 90 x 90 cms with a rolled edge. Mixed media, appliqué or other techniques are not suitable for this competition. Please don’t send your finished silk scarf. Entries must be scanned or photographed and files no larger than 2mb emailed to competitions@selvedge.org with the subject line ‘Celebrate 2012’ and your name and telephone number. Those selected to exhibit will be contacted by email and required to submit their finished scarves. Closing date 31 May 2012.

LauraKnight Sleep tight... Doll quilts and their beds We were delighted with all of the entries to our doll bed quilt competition and selecting the winners was, needless to say, a difficult task. If you were able to visit the International Quilt Festival in Houston in November then we hope you enjoyed viewing the winning quilts. We’re pleased to announce that we will be running another doll bed and quilt exhibition this year. The details will be available on the Selvedge website soon but now is the time to think about fabrics and techniques for your miniature quilt! Dear Polly, Thank you to Andrew Smith and Selvedge for offering such a lovely prize. We had a truly wonderful time. The people of Cley were friendly and hospitable – a warm contrast to the beautiful bleakness of the coastline.

Our stay at the Manor Coach House was fabulous - the house more than accommodated our short stay with gorgeous toiletries, a welcome hamper and simple, tasteful décor. We celebrated our second wedding anniversary and it was just perfect. Kind regards, Tabitha
