CONFERENCE: “TEXTILES FROM THE NILE VALLEY” The International research group “Textiles from the Nile Valley” (TF 4/09, p. 35) is going to prepare its 7th conference. Karine and Fernand Huts will host the participants at “HeadquARTers” in the heart of their business centre Katoen Natie, Van Aerdtstraat 33, B2060 Antwerp, Belgium. The conference will take place from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th October 2011, following the CIETA conference in Copenhagen.

The meetings will start with a reception and dinner on Friday evening. – After five meetings dedicated to a special theme the organisers considered it would be a good idea to focus on current individual research on textiles (e.g. discoveries during recent excavations, museum’s items, iconography, dating and colours, technology, conservation etc.) Scholars are invited to present their own projects and to discuss them among the participants. As usual, contributions – preferably in English, about 20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion – should be based on material from Egypt of the 1st millennium approximately. References and comparisons to neighbouring countries of the Mediterranean and the Near East are most welcome. Those who wish to give a paper in Antwerp are kindly requested to contact the organisers as soon as possible, preferably until the end of March 2011. For all those who would like to participate without giving a paper: Please, inform the organisers about your participation at the latest until 30 June 2011.

Compiled all over Europe, these creations have formed the basis for the development of the world famous St. Gallen embroidery, which expresses the modern Zeitgeist to this day.

The development began with linen, followed by half linen and muslin, continuing through hand- and machinemade embroideries and ending with further changes in the current digital age, which has given rise to new interpretations and advances. Divided into three sections, the StGall exhibition is devoted to a) the historic ‘lace story’, displaying hand-made creations from all over Europe; b) the heyday of embroidery; and c) the fascinating visions leading to a new age.

The renowned St. Gallen fabric designer Martin Leuthold of the Jakob Schlaepfer company and the Lucerne illustrator and costume designer Bernhard Duss act as both curators and scenographers. More information on the website (www.textilmuseum.ch).

THE ‘VENETIAN GROS POINT’ SYMPOSIUM This scientif ic symposium, held at the St. Gallen Textile Museum on 20th and 21st May 2011, is devoted to the most important type of 17th century lace that still exerts a decisive influence on formal development in textile design. The current knowledge of lace will be presented in a multifaceted programme during the two symposium days to throw light on its many aspects and analyse the phenomenon in a lively exchange with the participants. The registration fee i s Euro 90; it covers the coffee breaks, lunch, the museum entrance fee and a tour of the town. Please register by mid April; tel: +41-71/2221744; email: info@textilmuseum.ch
