EDITORIAL
What can inspire a magazine of 30 years’ and a textile network of 20 years’ standing? Fresh young initiatives appear to be the ones to focus on what is necessary rather than what is feasible. It takes a great deal of naivety to bring a new spark to what is feasible.
We experienced such fresh thinking in the context of the Ibero-American Textile Network and the textile scene of Kaunas, a city located in a country that is adapting to new requirements after a long period of confinement, where people make efforts to pick up on old strengths and face an uncertain future with a great deal of courage.
We had a similar experience regarding our magazine when the borders with Eastern Europe opened. Although we had no old strengths to draw on, we did have an idea of what needed to be done in the textile arts. We believed that communication between the player s in our f ield was required, and hoped to provide a form of organisation for them in Europe. This led to the formation of the European Textile Network, a hopelessly homeless undertaking for people with a national focus.
In the mid 1980s, the Soviet Union’s efforts at reform spurred on many people in our continent, and many things suddenly seemed possible. In 1986, prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain, textile people from various countries followed an invitation from Textilforum association to meet in Northern Germany and discuss the chances of establishing a European textile network (see TF 3/1986,
pages 46/47); this network began operating under the umbrella of the Council of Europe in the early 1990s.
Soon after, and probably partially due to the nationally inspired reunification of the two German states, nationalist tendencies noticeably increased in Europe, marginalising initiatives that embraced a pan-European approach. These trends also affected the European Textile Network, whose „homelessness“ i s becoming more and more apparent.
The anniversaries of Textile Forum and ETN in Kaunas will take place among an audience willing to be inspired with enthusiasm for textile matters – one that celebrates its 8th Biennial and is still gaining experience of international dialogue. We have successfully revived a number of personal ties between Latin America and the Kaunas event in the hope that old initiatives in Europe and our old North American and East Asian colleagues will see a breath of fresh air.
At any rate, this year’s events in Kaunas will provide a good overview of the state of textile affairs in our part of the world. It is worth making the journey to Lithuania. Dietmar Laue
