EDITORIAL
We had trouble deciding on a definite theme for this i ssue as its contents are defined by three subjects in equal measure: 1) Kaunas, a European centre of textile art, its 8th Biennial scheduled in 2011 and the parallel 16th ETN Conference marking the 30th anniversary of Textile Forum 2) The f irst conference of Red Textil Iberoamericana, a Latin American initiative, and its future prospects 3) The Frankfurt Book Fair, with Argentina as guest country and new publications in the f ield of textiles All three main themes are linked, although that link is tenuous in the case of the book fair, where the connection exists only because of the choice of guest country and a few contributions from Ibero-american countries.
Our colleagues in Latin America and Kaunas have recently encouraged us by bringing a breath of fresh air to our editorial department; our partners across the ocean have shown us approaches that are completely different from Central European ways, while those in Lithuania inspire us by their broad vision, combined with an enterprising spirit as regards the textile arts. It is our great wish to acquaint these two worlds with one another, preferably no later than the autumn of 2011, when Textile Forum celebrates its anniversary.
TEXTILE FORUM TURNS 30 In the Editorial page of TF 2/2010, we drew our readers’ attention to the 20th anniversary of the European Textile Network (ETN), which was founded almost 10 years after the establishment of Textile Forum e.V., a registered association. Our magazine constitutes a link between the two initiatives, to which it has always been committed. In September/October of this year, the textile art community of Kaunas and ourselves agreed that we would combine celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Kaunas educational institution with the 30th anniversary of Textile Forum. Subsequently, we went through our old files here in Hanover in search of evidence that the dates set for the Kaunas event (22nd to 30th September 2011) correspond to our own beginnings in September 1981. We still have the minutes of our f irst discussion on establishing Textile Forum, dated 26th September 1981; six founding members met on that date, including Beatrijs Sterk and Dietmar Laue. It was they who called
'Reading tent' at the inner court of the Frankfurt
Book Fair the foundation meeting of the Textile Forum association, held at Friedenstr. 5 in Hanover on 28th/29th November 1981, during which the form and subject matter of the magazine was decided. The first issue was published in April 1982.
Textile Forum has always been more than an association or a magazine. Textile Forum undertook to ensure that in future, textile culture would attain a status equal to agriculture and architecture in the modern appreciation of culture.
In TF 2/2011, we will outline the chronology of our efforts, which we will be unable to continue for another 30 years. Our work will rest on many shoulders as there are plenty of successors willing to take charge of textile culture. As publishers in this field, we consider ourselves happy losers and will state our reasons for this view. The question that remains is whether we will find people willing to continue our specific work, more so as we consider it a Sisyphean task.
We hope to raise readers’ curiosity about the Kaunas event; for further details see page 22/23. Beatrijs Sterk & Dietmar Laue
