Dolores Hart stole the show at this week’s Oscars. The 73-year-old, who left Hollywood to become a nun 49 years ago, attended the Oscars as a member of the Academy and also because her story, which was made into a short film, was nominated for Best Documentary.

God is Bigger than Elvis lost out to Saving Face but it didn’t stop Mother Dolores from stealing the show.

She was apparently reluctant to step back into the limelight after so long but deceided to use it as an evangelising tool. When asked how she could go from kissing Elvis to becoming a nun, Mother Dolores answered: “How much closer to Heaven can you get?”

‘We must pick up baton from St Paul’s protest’

A Catholic priest has called for the Church to pick up the baton that has been passed to it by the Occupy Movement after police and bailiffs moved in to forcibly remove protesters from the precincts of St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Monday night.

Fr Joe Ryan, the head of the Westminster diocesan Justice and Peace Commission, was a regular visitor and supporter of the St Paul’s camp.

“Occupy London was a wake-up call to all of us,” Fr Ryan said. “They were putting into words what many of us were feeling but hadn’t got round to voicing our opinions.”

He said the protest movement reflected Gospel values with its concerns over economic injustice and poverty worldwide.

“We all knew that sooner or later, Occupy would be removed but whether that happened in November or February, they had done their job. It is up to each of us to respond and continue the work they began.

“Whether there are people around St Paul’s or not, those issues still need to be addressed. They are not going to disappear.

“This is our challenge now – how do we take up the ‘baton’ or do we go back to square one and ignore the challenge?

“As individuals, Church, politicians and concerned citizens, we need to look around, find out who is already trying to do this work and row in with them. Together we can make a difference – we can change thing to make a better world. The ball is now in our court.”
