Well, the time has come for another ‘themed’ issue, this time its a trend towards monochrome - good old black and white. Favoured by many a photographer due to its relative cheapness and possibility of ‘at home’ developing, there’s nothing can match a decent photo for providing some of the minute detail that’s lost in a colour exposure. Not that we’re avoiding colour altogether - I think our supportive advertisers might take a dim view if their wares weren’t displayed in colour. The same goes for some of Brian Penney’s photos, including the unusual shot of a ‘Warship’ with the Up ‘Cornish Riviera Limited’ taken from the cab of D601 Ark Royal. I hope you like the collection we’ve put together. As they say, ‘there’s more where that came from’ and we could produce another ‘black, white and well read’ issue in the future - it’s in your hands!

COVER: D2060 Lion was completed in April 1962 by BRC&W, initial trials were undertaken with empty stock between Birmingham and Chester and the test train is shown passing through Shrewsbury in May 1962 en-route to Birmingham. Week commencing May 14, 1962, Lion worked on the 15:35 Wolverhampton to Paddington service and 19:10 return.
