MIXED DOUBLES

Part Four – Continuing on from the earlier parts of this feature, we now look at the period from privatisation to the present day (1994-2010)

In this final part of this photographic series further locomotive class rationalisation has taken place, but some of the older classes remain. Locomotives in preservation and the Class 50s, the last of which were withdrawn in March 1994, have not been included.

This period saw major changes in British loco management policy. General Motors Class 66 (a development from the Class 59) was introduced in 1998, becoming the UK standard freight locomotive. All GM products were fitted with the AAR (Association of American Railroads) multiple-working capability.

EWS’s high locomotive utilization policy, and the implementation of track access charges, saw locomotives being ferried round the country ‘dead in train’ as a day to day occurrence, rather than using a path for a light engine movement.

Freightliner fitted a number of Class 47’s with a multiple working capability (known as Green Circle) and newcomer Direct Rail Services fitted some of its 37’s with the TDM system.

For the purpose of this feature Class 50 and rail tours where the loco combination is provided ‘on request’ have not been included.

66 028, with 37 372 “dead in train”, passes Berkley Marsh near Frome with the 13:34 Fawley – Plymouth oil service. The 37 was en route to St. Blazey on 11th August 2000.

Freightliner 66505 and 57002 “dead in train”, pass Upton Scudamore with train 4O02, the 11:14 Lawley Street - Southampton Maritime, diverted due to the Basingstoke remodelling. The date is 29th April 2006.
